Advantages of using a reusable gavage / animal feeding needles

There has been a lot of debate about using reusable vs disposable Gavage Needles. Here is a list of pros and cons of using a reusable gavage needle

Pros of reusable feeding needles:

1. Animal cannot chew the tube

2. Smoother tips as sometimes plastic tips may contain rough edges that may catch esophageal tissue while insertion and extraction of needle

3. Tips do not come off easily which may be the case with some disposable feeding needles

4. Retains tube shape when needle tube is bended in certain angle

5. Easy to clean and sterilize

Cons of reusable feeding needles:

1. In short term operating cost may be higher due to sterilization costs but over long term reusable needles may be more cost effective depending on frequency of usage.
